1. What can you tell us about the 3-packs popping up on e-bay? The ones with Mantis and Deadman and the new Batman variants?

These are for international markets which rely on having A list heroes like Batman and Superman in every pack.

Just to refresh everyone's memory, below are the said 3-packs as they appeared on e-bay courtesy of a2ztoystore

2. Are there hopes of the lead villains from Justice League and Unlimited appearing in the next wave?

Yes, there will be more villains in the JLU line. Most of the lead villains like Luthor and Grodd have been on the shelf very recently and may be off shelf for a bit. (although Luthor will be in an upcoming 6 pack in the fall)

3. Will we see any more figures from the Gotham Knights and Wonder Woman series of DCIH?

Not immediately, but it is possible in time.

4. Is the Aquaman seen in Toyfare the final look? Or will you be veering more towards the Superman Animated Series style?

We are still tweaking the figure. It will not have the necklace.

5. Are we seeing any more bulky characters soon?

Yes.

A2ZToys Pulls Unreleased JLU/DCUC Figure listings

In light of recent developments, A2zToystore has decided to pull the listings of all unreleased Mattel product from their e-bay store. The e-bay store will continue to operate but without the said product.

I've read from your site that seems there's some impact on the product listings.
As mentioned before I'm just a collector and pick up the toys from local stores, and just want to share the fun with others. However I don't want the eBay listings hurt Mattel or other related
companies. I just acknowledge that really matters after reading the message. As a fan and collector of DC and Mattel I've pulled out the listings already. I hope you and Mattel would understand.
I'm also looking forward to the new figures from Mattel on the market :) And we have to wait for the official photos from Mattel and hope we could get the new information soon.

New figures on the internet? Ebay?

Mattel fans,

A lot of fans have asked this week about unannounced figures from different lines as well as packaged images of figures showing up first on Ebay or other sites as well as why some fan sites have figures for "review" before they are in stores. Allow me to shed some light.

First off, the figures for review are sent out by me or Toyguru to different fan sites for PR. We get a very small sample of early figure for our review and I try to send them out to key fan sites so that all of our fans can enjoy final product images as a sneak before they hit stores.

As for unannounced figures or packaged images showing up on Ebay, well all I can say is 1: sometimes these are custom figures we have nothing to do with, and 2: sometimes these are figures removed from our vendors without permission and Mattel vigilantly will go after anyone involved in these auctions from the seller to the buyer. Our best advise; stay as uninvolved in these auctions as you can. Everyone at Mattel is very proud of our product and the hard working people who work on it. Auctions of non final product hurts everyone. It hurts our sales, it hurts our licensors and it hurts our fans as many times this product is not final (both toy and package) and gives the wrong impression of what product will be like leading to false conclusion.

Until product is revealed officially either here or on a fan site (and by officially on a fan site we mean as in when we send a sample out for review like we did with a few JLU figures and Mer-Man last week).

Mattel will continue to legally defend its property and have it returned to us. Bootleg and prototype theft has always been a problem with highly collectable lines for every manufacture in the business and I highly recommend fans not getting involved in it. It is not something you want to poke around with as this is Mattel property and we will go after it and involve resources needed to do so.

We will continue to use this forum and the fan sites to get the most up to date OFFICIAL images to our fans. We have many figures "in the cooker" for all of our lines, some will see the light of day sooner than others, some may not come out anytime soon for multiple reasons (legal, logistic, otherwise) which is why we try to hold back any images or announcements until we know the figure is officially coming out and final.

And on a cheerier note, look for some big announcement later this week of all new official product that IS coming out later this summer on my Facebook page!

We basically archive as much of the news around the net (which means not ALL of the news is from us but we try to put it in one source). We've asked him if we are to ignore the auctions entirely or if we're allowed to reflect the news yet disclaim.

Wave 3 3-packs! A short review

All the figures in these packs are awesome when it comes to paint aps and sculpt. Many kudos to Mattel for this great improvement. Cool how Cheetah has two open hands and an articulated tail (making the entire figure, technically, a unique sculpt.

Seems though that the new figures are waaay too rubbery Might have a bit of trouble keeping these guys standing as they stand for long periods of time.

Still I'm very happy with these new figures. Batman Beyond kept the Batman arms. Bruce is a bit tall (as are most guys with the suits) but the sculpt makes up for it.

Acquired in the Philippines in specialty stores. I'm not certain for myself but dyjinn (also from the Philippines) said they're also available in select mainstream stores.

Please note that the Guardian figure will indeed be the Classic Guardian and not the modern Guardian as shown at NYCC and in Toy Fare. (this was due to the fact that we did not have tooling available to do both and vintage version was farther along in the process).

Also note that we will have a second variant of Wildcat but have not confirmed what that is yet.

Finally, we are working very hard on getting the MattyCollector Facebook page back up and running. There were a few one-time-only problems but we are working these out with Facebook right now and hope to either restore the original page or get a new permanent page up by the end of the week. We did want to announce that the DCUC Ultraman and Alex Luthor 2 pack will go on sale April 15th and the JLU LOSH pack will go on sale May 15th.

Faker will be on sale this Tuesday March 16th and will be limited to 4 per person due to his availability at NYCC.

March Batch of QnA from Mattel

1) When will the rest of the releases for 2009 be revealed? By our counts, there are about 20 or so more figures that have not been announced.

We will announce one more wave before SDCC and then another at the show along with the first 2010 wave.

2) When will you be revealing the SDCC exclusives? An alleged DCUC exclusive has already been "leaked", but no word on Cars, MoTU or JLU.

Sometime in April.

3) Will you be getting back to bulkier characters with this Falls 6 pack?

We will be doing larger characters in the near future. When and where they will show up has yet to be announced.

4) Now that Mattel is expanding the figure line past characters that were in the JLU cartoon, where will you be getting the packaging art from?

DC Comics has supplied us with original drawn turns of the characters as reference for our sculptors. We will be using these on the card backs.

5) What was Mattel's thoughts behind going with Wizard Shazam instead of Captain Marvel Jr?

We already had three heroes with capes and lighting bolts. We thought the Wizard was a good way to be a bit different in one slot. We do love Freddy and in time could get to him too.

Mattel Question and Answer for February batch 2

1. With the Secret Society and Legends packs ending their run, would it be possible to see the characters again in later assortments as singles or 3-packs?

Yes, we will definitely look into doing this. Our goal is to make sure all of the characters get re-released sooner then later. Deadshot, who was only available in a hard to find 3 pack will be out as a single in Wave 5. Keep in mind that the line is planned about 14 months in advance, so the figures you see now were slotted in back in early 2008. But we will begin working on ways to get these figures back out as we move forward.

When we see Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman in the new assortments, are you considering doing more relevant repaints such as has been done with Superman Prime and Classic Batman? Are you also releasing more color-corrected characters as you are Lex (SS), Dr Fate, Booster, Zatanna and Red Tornado?

Yes. We when we do repaints of main characters we are doing our best to make them collector relevant such as the Superman Red and Superman in JLU singles wave 5. We are not looking to do the wacky kid friendly repaints in this line. That is more for Brave and the Bold at this time. And yes, we are working on getting show accurate versions of all of those characters you mentioned out as well. In fact, all of those mentioned have been announced!

Many figures were discovered databased in Matty Collector.com but soon after the discovery have been pulled out. Were these for building a database?

That is exactly what that is for. We are doing our best to launch an all inclusive data base of images as soon as it is complete. We’re very busy on this project!

Will we be seeing more figures from the Batman Gotham Knight series of Infinite Heroes or is it only the 3-pack? Will there be other DTV versions of DC characters?

Yes. And in fact we just announced a Wonder Woman DVD figure in the IH line which will be packed in with the DVD exclusive to Best Buy. Look for this in early March!

What types of changes do we expect to see with Infinite Heroes with regard to articulation and style? Meaning what are the issues that have been addressed with the current design? Will the new figures match well with the ones in our current collection?

We have actually redesigned the IH buck from the ground up adding knee, elbow, wrist, ankle and neck articulation. Look for Animal Man in an upcoming three pack to be the first figure with this new articulation level.

Bio:

Amanda Waller appears in the animated television show Justice League Unlimited, voiced by Emmy-nominated actress CCH Pounder.

This version of the character leads the top secret Project Cadmus, a group that was formed at the behest of the United States government to create a counterforce to the Justice League should they go rogue. To that end, the project creates the Ultimen. Perhaps the most profound relationship she has is one of mutual enmity and respect with Batman. She knows about his secret identity of Bruce Wayne which she revealed when she called Batman "rich boy" in the episode "Ultimatum," just as he was able to gather intel on her past. She however has chosen to keep his secret. This was also shown in the episode "The Doomsday Sanction" in which Amanda is clearly shaken after talking to Batman, and he has seen her point by the end of the episode. Most interaction between Cadmus and the Justice League is via these two individuals.

As detailed in "Ultimatum," the Ultimen is a team of artificial superhumans with implanted memories, created to be loyal to the government. In addition, the project includes a clone of Supergirl named Galatea (effectively a disguised version of Power Girl), revealed in "Fearful Symmetry."

When The Question discovers the project and is captured, Waller and Lex Luthor give orders to Dr. Moon to run a full interrogation on The Question which is interrupted when he is rescued by Superman and the Huntress. Lex Luthor takes advantage of the incident to momentarily hijack the League's satellite headquarters' binary fusion cannon to fire on the now abandoned Cadmus base with massive collateral damage to falsely implicate the League. While the government investigates the firing, Waller decides to take action. It is revealed that Cadmus created dozens of clone copies of the Ultimen team in order to attack the Watchtower; with Galatea leading them, they mount a full offensive against League HQ, intending to overload the reactor and destroy the Watchtower with the team on it. However, when Batman presents evidence of Luthor's deception, Waller calls off the attack and releases the senior Leaguers, who had turned themselves in as an act of good faith. With the Leaguers in tow, she personally goes to arrest Luthor and stops his attempt to transfer his consciousness into a potentially invincible copy of Amazo. It is revealed that Brainiac implanted a nano-holistic copy of himself within Luthor's body years earlier, during the Superman: The Animated Series episode "Ghost in the Machine", and the Justice League is forced to defeat the two of them combined. Unknown to them during this battle, Waller had ordered a massive airstrike on standby to kill the combined villains, the Leaguers, and even herself should the heroes had failed to stop the menace. All this occurred in the four-part arc in the second season, including the episodes "Question Authority", "Flashpoint", "Panic in the Sky", and "Divided We Fall".

The final episode of JLU's second season, "Epilogue", is set sixty-five years past the current Justice League timeline — years after even the events of the Batman Beyond series, as we see Bruce Wayne further deteriorated and Terry McGinnis an adult. Here, McGinnis discovers that he is a partial genetic copy of Bruce Wayne; knowing that the Cadmus Project was the only group to have technology advanced enough to alter DNA, he seeks out Waller to find out about his own origins. She reveals some of the future of the Justice League — at some point, the government will appoint a liaison with the League (a post Waller will fill for some time) and they will fight a reconstituted Royal Flush Gang, with Ace, from the Justice League episode "Wild Cards", leading them. Waller also reveals that she was responsible for changing Terry's father's genes; knowing that Batman would never have children of his own, she used Cadmus technology to create a child with his DNA, so the world would not be without a Batman.

"Epilogue" shows the complexity of the character; at the same time she is talking about the world needing a hero like Batman and about her faith in God, she also calmly explains that her plan to ensure Terry became a new Batman was to have Terry's parents murdered by Andrea Beaumont (also known as the Phantasm from the 1993 animated film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm) whilst he watched, murders Beaumont ultimately refused to commit, for it would dishonor all Bruce stood for. From that point on, Waller would never have Terry's parents killed. But when Warren was murdered by Derek Powers, the project was successful. Waller sees that Terry becoming Batman is a sign from God but tells him he can make his own life, not live the same as Bruce's. She advises him to make choices for the people he loves if he wants to or not. Waller admits that many of her actions have been reprehensible, and will have much to account for with God when her time comes, so she is not a self-deluding villain. It is also revealed that she had been keeping an eye on Terry his whole life.

Ask Mattel Batch of Answers for December 15

Do you have specific labels for the bucks you use for a majority of the JLU figures? Like Booster Gold/Sinestro's square-ish body, the generic Waverider/Kyle Rayner body, the slim Atom/Dove body, the heavy Dove/Capt Atom body, the Joker body, the Two-Face body and the female buck?

The names you mentioned are pretty much how we do it. We don’t have “official” names, but we tend to call the body we used for Question the “Two-Face” body and the body we used for Gentleman Ghost the “Joker body”. It tends to be that the first figure to use a body buck gets to name it.

2. How does Mattel feel about the various customs that are made for the various lines? Do they get inspired by some of them? Do they even notice?

We think they are just terrific! Matty and Toy Guru spend a lot of time on the boards and when they find really cool customes or ideas they often print them out and hang them up on a shared idea wall for all of the member of the team to see!

3. Are there any plans to do a "fans choice" character poll for the JLU line along the lines of what was done for the DCUC line? Fans always love to have a voice in the character selection.

Because the JLU line is specific to an artistic style (i.e. the art deco look of the animated series) it is a bit harder to do a fan poll. We will take this suggestions through and discuss with our license partners.

4. Is there a light at the end of the tunnel for DCUC and JLU collectors in the Philippines and other Asian markets? Will we be seeing any DCUC series 3 onwards in retail? How about the new JLU Fan Collection?

That is up to your local retailers. We will ship product to anyone who orders it. JLU will be available for international markets in 2009, although in slightly different configurations with more A list characters in the mix. If you are not seeing your favorite Mattel line at your local retailer, ask for it! Only your retailer can place orders, and Mattel will be happy to ship product to anyone who orders it.

5. How do the Four Horseman split up the workload on character creation? Does each one have his specialty (faces, costumes, overall design, etc) or does each one pick a character or two and go at it so to speak?

Although the Four Horsemen do sometimes come up with some rough concept sketches or control drawings, much of the design process happens as the figure and accessories are being sculpted and fabricated.

Eric Treadaway and Chris Dahlberg handle the figural sculpting, while Jim Preziosi and H. Eric "Cornboy" Mayse tackle the fabrication portion of things. Often sculpting and fabrication happen simultaneously so fabricated parts can be incorporated into the sculpture seamlessly or vice versa.

Usually who does what depends on what's next up on the agenda (usually dependent upon deadlines), and who has just finished a project and is ready to move on to the next thing.

Often, if a character is a favorite of one of the Horsemen, or they're really looking forward to helping to create their own vision of a certain character, the other Horsemen will gladly step aside and let them have at it. There's never any real competition over who gets to do what characters or accessories.

Variety has just posted Warner Brothers' stand on Justice League, a third Nolan Batman film and the future of DC Comics in the movie industry.

"These are big, iconic characters," Noveck says. "So when you make them into a movie, you'd better be shooting for a pretty high standard. You're not always going to reach it, but you have to be shooting for it. We're going to make a Justice League movie, whether it's now or 10 years from now. But we're not going to do it and Warners is not going to do it until we know it's right."

From a personal email I received from Toy Guru(who works for Mattel):

I’m excited to share some great news about Mattel’s Justice League Unlimited line. Due to overwhelming support from the fans, Mattel and Target are teaming up to bring an all new Collector’s Line to store shelves starting this August!

16 brand new figures along with collector requested repaints and reissues will be available in singles, 3-packs and 6 packs. Figures will be out in two waves. Each wave will consist of two 6-packs, two 3 packs and five single carded figures, some with brand new accessories. This line will be sold exclusively at Target stores starting Aug 1, 2008. At this time the line will be an in store exclusive only.

Wave 1 will be revealed at New York Comic Con in April and Wave 2 will be shown at Comic Con San Diego in July.

There may be a few other JLU surprises this year as well. But fans will just have to wait for the summer conventions to find out what!

We are pleased so show the first 6-pack for Wave 1: Attack from Apokolips featuring Superman, Darkseid, Mr. Miracle, Lashina, Mantis and Forager.

Along with these figures, we are excited to announce that the line will also include several major MIA characters including The Question!

Not that they had issues or anythin' but those images we saw on the video? They're up on a gallery now. Apparently the smaller figures DO belong to a smaller line and are called DC Universe: Infinite Heroes. The 'Collector Series' label will refer to boxed sets of 3 figures, such as Flash/Mirror Master/Weather Wizard, Commissioner Gordon/GCPD/GCPD and just maybe Hawkman/and what seems to be 2 Thanagarians. More new figures come in the form of Captain Marvel, Power Girl, Batwoman, Batman, Question, Husk, Wildcat, Killer Croc

JLU fans rejoice. The 10" Hourman is now available in some stores in the Manila area (Philippines). I've spotted a couple at the Rustan's department store in Glorietta Makati. Also there is currently an e-bay auction based in Singapore. Also spotted are Justice Lord versions of Green Lantern and The Flash. Both are straight repaints of their originals.

For those of you who can’t get enough of Mattel’s DC Universe Classics, a trio of black-clad figures will be available at the Mattel booth. Tech Suit Mr. Freeze will be exclusive to the show, and if you didn’t snag a Knight Shadow Batman or Black Outfit Superman at retail, you’ll get another shot at both.

From the photos it seems that the new stuff we're getting are the long awaited Tech-suit/Full-suited Mr Freeze and a Black Suit Superman that difers from the original by having a solid black neck area (as opposed to exposed skin).

Here are tidbits of info from ToyFare regarding JLU 2008.

We will be seeing 16 new characters soon, not including repaints/redecos. Here's what's been confirmed.

1. The Question
2. Lashina
3. Forager
4. Mantis

Lashina, Forager and Mantis will be part of a 6-pack with Mr Miracle, Superman and Darkseid (not a new version)

JLU will be a Target exclusive line beginning summer. It is yet unexplained what will happen to the foreign market.

2009 will most likely usher in more non-TV animated characters.

News from Wizard World Chicago 2007!

Per Marcus Mebes, the following was announced today at Wizard World Texas:

1.) Hal Jordan will be THE Green Lantern of the JLA. John Stewart will be moving to the sidelines.

2.) In the Arena series, Blue Beetle(Jamie) vs. the Blue Beetle of Earth C!

3.) Risk will be getting "arms" and his story will be told in a Geoff Johns written title.

4.) Titans(the Winick & Churchill series) is delayed until April due to Churchill suffering a shoulder injury.

5.) Superman Prime will be an ongoing villain in the DCU.

6.) Bart Allen's story isn't finished.

7.) Zatanna will be joining the JLA!!!

8.) Red Arrow will remain on the JLA while in the Titans.

First Batch of Mattel Questions and Answers - November

Christmas came early. Here are our first batch of answers from Mattel:

1.) Like JLU, will DCSCH/DCUC re-release figures like Azrael, Blue skirt Supergirl, etc?

This is something we are looking into and we hope to have announcement to make soon. We are well aware of the demand for harder to find 06 and 07 figures. Right now the main line will consist of all new figures, but this is an excellent option for some exclusive items for select retailers.

2.) It seems that the latest batches of figures have been made using a softer grade of plastic than was previously used. This has resulted in a higher degree of "jelly legs" than before. Are there any plans to correct this or can we expect this to continue?

Mattel constantly works with our vendors to improve quality. We’ll pass these comments along to the design team so they can work on needed improvements.

3.) Any plans for the future "Justice League Unlimited" characters seen in "The Once and Future Thing" and "Epilogue"? I'm particularly interested in the Future Static Shock character.

This is certainly a set of characters that has come up. Until we are ready to make an announcement about JLU Unlimited, you’ll just have to wait and see. No one is off the table and if all plans go through we think fans will be very excited about the 08 line up.

4.) Now that the JLU line is being targeted more toward collectors, will we see character variants that are comic / show accurate? (for example: Savage Time Batman, Future Superman, etc.)

Again, see our previous answer. We are exploring all of these character options and are looking at ways of keeping the Core 7 in the line but making them fresh for fans and collectors. Does this mean more “Yellow suit Batman” no. But it does mean we are exploring other fan requested decos of these characters to do in the JLU style. Until we are ready to make an official announcement you’ll have to wait and see!

5.) Is there any chance of more playsets or vehicles in the JLU line?

At this time the line will center around the 4 ¾ size figures.

Hey guys...so I wet to Austin last night......was going to a haunted house and a party with friends.....but of course I managed to swing by toys r us to see what they had....

I saw this and I at first thought someone repackaged it but upon looking at whole thing it does not appear to have been opened I could be wrong but really does not look to have been opened at all..........I bought it because I needed a better painted Blk Canary....but still its strange as the backing and the name cards go to vigilnate/obsidian/brainiac.....

if it was repackaged I think its weird that they would replace BC with the older one and in my opinion the better version
